What is Dementia?
Dementia is a general term for a decline in cognitive function severe enough to interfere with daily life. It is not a specific disease but rather a collection of symptoms caused by various conditions affecting the brain. Alzheimer’s disease is the most common type of dementia, but there are other forms, including vascular dementia, Lewy body dementia, and frontotemporal disorders.
What Are the Symptoms of Dementia?
While the symptoms of dementia can vary, diagnosis requires evidence of substantial cognitive decline in one or more of the following cognitive domains:
- Memory and learning
- Executive function (planning, decision-making)
- Attention
- Language
- Perceptual-motor function
- Social cognition (recognizing emotions, behavior in social context)
The diagnosis requires that cognitive deficits interfere with a person’s ability to perform everyday activities independently (e.g., managing finances, medication, or personal care).
A lack of short-term memory is typically a large problem for most patients suffering from dementia. Remembering things such as the location of a purse or wallet, paying bills, planning meals, scheduling appointments, and traveling out of the neighborhood may become challenging for those suffering from dementia.
What Causes Dementia?
Dementia is caused by damage to brain cells. This damage causes difficulties within the brain cells’ communication, and directly affects thinking behavior. Changes in the brain that cause dementia are usually permanent and worsen over time.
